A Journey Through Europe in an Electric Vehicle: Lessons Learned (Part three of three)
Part 3: Comparing Europe to the US and Lessons Learned
In this final part of our journey through Europe in an electric vehicle, let's delve into comparing the European EV charging network with that of the US and summarize the key lessons learned.
Europe’s extensive charging network is undoubtedly impressive, offering a higher density of charging stations than the US. However, the experience is marred by the fragmented app-based payment system. Each country has its own preferred apps and payment methods, creating a cumbersome and often frustrating experience for travelers. In contrast, platforms like OK2Charge in the US offer a simpler solution. With OK2Charge, there's no need to download multiple apps or worry about payment compatibility. Users can scan a QR code on the charger and pay using various methods, including numerous credit cards, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. This simplicity is something European networks could learn from.
While Europe is ahead of the US in terms of infrastructure, the user convenience and payment systems need significant improvement. The fragmented nature of the European charging apps and inconsistent payment methods are significant obstacles to a seamless EV charging experience. OK2Charge’s approach—eliminating the need for multiple apps and offering versatile payment options—stands out as a model for the future.
Traveling through Europe in an EV was an incredible experience, despite the challenges. The beautiful landscapes, the thrill of exploring new places, and the knowledge gained about EV charging networks were all invaluable. This adventure taught me that while Europe's infrastructure is impressive, there's still room for improvement. By adopting more user-friendly payment systems and reducing the reliance on numerous apps, Europe could further enhance its position as a leader in EV infrastructure.
