A Journey Through Europe in an Electric Vehicle: Lessons Learned (Part two of three)
Part 2: Miio and Tesla Supercharger Membership
Continuing from where we left off, to circumvent some of the issues with multiple apps, I decided to rely on an app called Miio. Miio was a bit of a lifesaver as it worked across multiple countries, offering a semblance of convenience. However, this convenience came at a cost—literally. Miio often charged double the amount due to additional fees and inflated kWh costs. While it was a relief to have a somewhat reliable option, the financial strain was noticeable.
Even though charging stations are everywhere, to streamline our charging experience, I decided to invest in the Tesla Supercharger membership. Even though supercharger stations were frequently located off the highway, requiring additional travel time, the membership quickly proved its value. The lower kWh prices compared to Miio meant that the membership paid for itself with a few charges. The reliability and cost-effectiveness of Tesla Superchargers were a welcome relief from the otherwise chaotic charging landscape.
Using the Tesla Supercharger network allowed for a more predictable and less stressful charging experience. The stations were well-maintained and easy to use, providing peace of mind during our travels. This experience underscored the importance of having a reliable and cost-effective charging solution when traveling long distances in an EV.
In the final part of this series, I’ll compare the European charging network to the US and share the key lessons I learned from my journey. Stay tuned!
